THE WORLD DOESN’T NEED SUPERMAN
BUT THE SON OF MAN
-Magambo-
The Superman mania is all over the town. I was a kid when the first Superman movie was shown in 1979 with Christopher Reeve as the “Man of Steel” and it was exciting for after every kid was glued to its animated series on TV. Now in 2006 comes “Superman Returns” and it casts a new actor—Brandon Routh. Watching it on the screen amazed me with its technology, digital effects and the emotion-eliciting plot. The director did it well when the romantic connection between Clark Kent and Lois Lane was depicted. There seemed to be a love lost between them, and when Clark appeared after a long time, he saw the picture of Lois with her husband and child right on her office desk. Suddenly, a Pulitzer Prize-winning essay by Lois entitled “The World Doesn’t Need Superman” was displayed, and this moved him to wonder why?
A corruption-stricken nation like the Philippines desperately needs heroes to look up to like Superman. In reality, this character remains a product of the creative imagination. Superman is someone who only lives in our wild fantasies. We cant’ help but admire his virtues, his unending pursuit of justice and his indomitable spirit to obstruct the evil from hurting others.
There’s a man named Jesus Christ whose power transcends all the world superpowers. In fact, all governments rest on his shoulders. His influence is felt in deep recesses of hearts and souls of His followers. Compared to the “Man of steel,” He lived so shortly barely 33 years old, poor and obscure, His countenance was nothing when one looks at the physique of Superman, yet He was full of compassion for the outcasts and the oppressed. Like Superman, He also pursued the ideals of truth, goodness nad justice. His mission is coupled with love so unconditional and self-giving—in fact He has promised an eternal life for those who believe. I can’t imagine how human life could be without Him. Superman is not omnipresent but He is—his presence is everywhere. His senses are keen, just a single mention of His name, fear is gone, evil forces are shattered. How inexplicable His nature is! He is the central figure of our faith—so central that without Him—we lose our balance and can’t make it to the end.
In this hopelessly dying world, it is the Son of Man, JESUS CHRIST that we all need. Remember that we are doomed to die twice—physically and spiritually. When He died thousand of years ago, He saved us form severe afflictions. He did it in our place. Secondly, He is again dying almost everyday as antidote to the tortures of hell. No one could ever do it even Superman, the Son of Man does these beyond the frames of the human mind because of one reason—LOVE.
Hmmm… I know this has been too late. Superman mania is over and so is 2006. But I don’t think that is an enough reason to limit me from posting this blog. It’s been so long since I wanted to post this. This has been really inspirational to me after I got this in our church service. But before, I don’t want to have a blog. But since it’s needed in order to make photo albums and that many people have viewed my blog already…I did. And besides…Jesus is not phenomenal like Superman, but indeed… Everlasting!!! Hope it will also bring enlightenment and inspiration to everyone who reads.
